O Caracol dos Profetas 

Caracol is one of the traditional grape varieties on the island of Porto Santo. There are several stories and myths about its potential origin, such as that it was a certain Mr. Caracol who brought and planted it.

António Maçanita's insatiable curiosity led him to analyze the microsatellites, which demonstrate its enormous genetic proximity to the Listrão, with only one differing from a total of 20, which could have the same progenitor or be progenitors of each other.

Regarding the name, research in the old bibliography may also reveal the reason for the name Caracol. Gaspar Frutuoso in 1580 stated: “there are many vineyards, which produce good grapes; many white snails are created on them, in so many ways, that, in parts, they cover the bunch of grapes so much that no berries appear on them”.

Fazendas da Areia

The name refers to the plots whose soils are pure limestone sands, from which grapes with a different level of complexity and concentration come.

“Farm” is the term used locally to designate a place, small property, farm.

“Sand” is the type of soil found on these farms, calcareous sandstones resulting from accumulation over millions of years.
